Beer has been a staple of human cultures from the time the Egyptians first made their liquid bread. It is easy to see why when one considers the diverse situations with which it perfectly pairs. For instance, a cold beer after an afternoon mowing the lawn under a hot sun hits just as perfectly as sipping it out of a glass as you laugh and chat with your friends at your favorite local bar. For this reason, it’s become a common hobby for many to explore a city’s local breweries and see what unique flavors are hiding in plain sight. Well, for this reason we have put together a list of the top five breweries in Annapolis so you can ensure you try the best the local area has to offer!
Calvert Brewing Company
Starting our list through our journey of Annapolis local brews is the Calvert Brewing Company, who can lay claim to being one of the largest breweries in Maryland as well as one of the most established craft breweries. Here you’ll find a wide selection of beers on tap which are constantly rotated, ensuring that every time you come in there is something new to try and please one’s palate. You’ll find such sweet creations as the Strawberry Pineapple Milkshake Smoothie and the I Just Crush a Lot Tart Cherry and Peach. However, you’ll also find some bolder, more flavorful brews such as the Excellent Adventure IPA, the Route 4 West Coast IPA, and the Besos Stout. As you can see, there is a little bit for everyone, and no matter your personal tastes, you are sure to find something to satisfy at Calvert Brewing Company.
Next up on our trip we have a nano-brewery who, despite their small size, offers a wide range of different brews for you to try. You’ll find the Annapolis Boat (a dry hopped Kolsch-style ale), the Turnout Beer (a rye and wheat made Pale Ale), the IO Beyond (a dry hopped Kolsch-style ale), the Berry Me in a Hot Tub (kettle soured wheat ale), and many others! In addition, they serve a selection of food items all made with fresh and local products. You’ll find bar favorites like the classic soft pretzel, but you’ll also find some surprising options like a range of tacos, crab rolls, and a pesto prosciutto panini. If you are looking for something to nibble on, check out their boards such as those with cheese or others with fish. Further, check their calendar often, as it isn’t unusual for them to hold several fundraising and charity events throughout the year. Finally, if you find yourself in a hurry, check out their carryout service! If you are looking for some fresh food and a good homemade brew, make sure you stop by Froward Brewing.
Chesepiooc Real Ale Brewery
Offering both indoor and outdoor seating, Chesepiooc and its tap room are sure to have you entertained for hours sampling their various brews. You’ll find such creations as the Cosmik Tangerine (American IPA), the sweet Dark Symphony Stout, the strong and bitter Hey Bulldog ESB, or the sweet and bubbly Blood Orange Cider, as well as many other unique and delicious homebrews. However, while their main priority is brewing, Chesepiooc is a perfect place to go if you’re looking for entertainment as you’ll find karaoke, cornhole, trivia nights, and bingo all taking place under its roof. Further, if there are any true beer lovers in your group, sign them up for the Brewer for a Day package. With this gift, the lucky individual will get to first choose a style of beer, then collaborate on its unique recipe, and then make and sample their creation. Along with this, you get a wide range of freebies such as a free t-shirt and a growler upon tapping your own special brew. So, if you are looking for a place with great brews, entertainment that will have the night flight by, and possibly to even create something new and exciting, stop by Chesepiooc Real Ale Brewery today!
Rams Head Tavern
This family owned and operated tavern is perfect for those looking to come with the entire family, little ones included. While not strictly speaking a brewery themselves, they work exceptionally close with Fordham & Dominion Brewing Company, thus earning a spot on this list. At Rams Head Tavern you will find a range of different house drafts including the 11th Sour (A Berliner Weisse), the Backstage IPA, the self-named Rams Head IPA, and more! As well, for those who are looking for a familiar face, check out their list of guest drafts which include the sweet cider Virginia Draft, the complex Franziskaner Premium Weisssbier Naturub, the Nanticoke Nectar IPA, and other common names. Once you pick the perfect brew, make sure you pair it with some one of the various items from their diverse menu. You’ll find some classic favorites like wings and firecracker shrimp. However, you’ll also a variety of familiar tacos, flatbreads, and burgers. However, for those looking for something a bit different, check out their Bison Meatloaf or their Chicken Carmalino. While the brews and food at the Rams Head are sure to have you coming back, the specials (such as $6 burger night) and live music is what give it its spark and earned its place so high upon our list. So, come grab a good burger, a home brew, and enjoy an evening with the entire family at the Rams Head Tavern.
Cult Classic Brewing Company
Finally, as we approach our number one spot, we have a rather unique brewing company who has truly created not only a place to enjoy a well-made brew, but also truly made a place perfect for entertaining the masses. You’ll find that they are constantly having events and activities to create a fun and social atmosphere. You’ll find such things as live music where you can dance the night away as the band rocks on, as well as movie nights where you can sip your brew as you get lost in a tale upon the screen, or even comedy nights where laughter will ring in your ears as the bitter hops hit your tongue. Not only this, but they host a farmers’ market so you can both get a good drink, as well as peruse the wares sold by the various locals.
Of course, a brewery wouldn’t be complete with a diverse array of brews. You’ll find such unique creations as the Chocolate Cherry Porter, the Proof of Life (Blood Orange/Cherry), and the UFOria Citra IPA. Further, you’ll find a variety of classic bar foods to complement your expertly drafted drink. If you’re looking for something greasy, yet delicious, then dig into a basket of jalapeno poppers, mozzarella sticks, or beer battered onion rings. If you are looking for something a bit healthier, check out their selection of wraps, including their Buffalo Chicken wrap. You’ll also find your typical hamburgers as well as sandwiches. Further, it wouldn’t be a proper establishment if they didn’t offer a selection of jumbo wings. If you are looking to truly have some fun as the night wears on and enjoy a selection of delicious brews, make sure you stop by Cult Classic Brewing Company.
