While the spring weather in Annapolis can be a bit cool at times, and the wind can get a little gusty, it is still the perfect time to visit this historic sea port. Flowers and trees are beginning to bloom, and the entire city is starting to wake up after a long winter. It’s time to get outside with our Annapolis spring rentals and enjoy the warmer weather and maybe work off a few of those winter pounds!
Immerse Yourself in History
You can get in plenty of exercise just walking around Historic Downtown Annapolis and immersing yourself in the atmosphere and ambiance. Take a guided tour like the Revolutionary Annapolis Walking Tour, Haunted Harbor Tour, a Wine & Cheese Tour, or you can wander around on your own. Bask in the warm sunshine and history as you walk along cobblestone streets, past the port and waterfront, and historic buildings filled with shops, restaurants, bars, churches and residences.
A few spots to visit while you’re wandering around downtown are the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park, the Banneker-Douglas Museum, the Hammond-Harwood House, the Chase Lloyd House and the Kunta-Kinte Alex Haley Memorial. And of course, no visit to Annapolis is complete without a visit to the U.S. Naval Academy, where you can tour the museum, gardens, and enjoy the lovely Beaux Arts architecture.
If you’ve got the kids with you, but still want to visit historic spots, try Hogshead. This (free) 18th century historic landmark is an interactive, hands-on museum. Volunteers dressed in historic garb will offer visitors a chance to handle a musket or physician’s instruments. And Historic Londontown and Gardens has several historic structures on site along with the magnificent gardens, and has been designated a Site of Memory by the UNESCO Slave Route Project.
Kids of all ages will enjoy taking a guided tour on the water. Tour the local waterways, learn about the area’s history and maritime heritage while you enjoy the scenery. Of course, it will be even more fun when you book your tour on a Chinese junk-rigged cruising schooner! Annapolis Sailing Cruises: Schooner Woodwind, Liberte, the Schooner, Wilma Lee Skipjack Tours, and American Sailing Tours have a variety of boats and tours from which to choose.
Take in a Annapolis Spring Festival or Two
Start the season off by attending a few boat shows. At the Bay Bridge Boat Show you’ll enjoy views of the Chesapeake Bay and its famous bridge while you browse and climb aboard an amazing variety of yachts, cruisers, powerboats, pontoon boats, cycle boats, sailboats, and fishing boats. The weekend after the Bay Bridge Boat Show, the Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show has been featuring in-water demonstrations and seminars, along with the newest equipment and boats since 1970. View a wide variety of boats, from mono hulls and racing boats, to inflatables, catamarans and more. You can even learn to sail in the First Sail Workshop while you’re there.
For something a little different, try the Annapolis Oyster Roast & Sock Burning. This weird, but fun celebration has been entertaining visitors and locals alike since 1978. Join in for the burning of old winter socks to welcome spring. There’s plenty of live music, oysters, libations and more.
If you’re here in May, don’t miss May Day in Downtown Annapolis, when the entire downtown is exploding with baskets, bushels and bouquets of fresh, colorful flowers. And, just days before the city’s Annual Memorial Day parade, one of the most important events of the year takes place. Of course, I’m talking about Commissioning Week! Whether or not you’re directly involved, join in the excitement as the entire city joins in the celebration this spring in Annapolis when the current year’s midshipmen graduate.
