As the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread, more people are affected by it every day. Some, working on the front lines, or facing the virus, are affected directly. Others are affected more indirectly, by work shifts or job loss. And many of us have respectfully cancelled, missed or rescheduled trips, weddings, graduations, and more. Any way you look at it, this crisis is affecting us all. How has it affected the Annapolis, Maryland area, and what steps are being taken to prevent further spread and care for those who are ill or at risk? Here are some tips for COVID-19 in Annapolis!

What Is COVID-19?

Let us first discuss the facts. Coronavirus, which is also known as COVID-19, is a type of virus that causes diseases in a range of severities, from a simple common cold to more serious respiratory problems, like pneumonia. The illness started in China, but it has spread and there have now been confirmed cases in dozens of countries, including the United States.

Safety Measures Being Implemented

What safety measures have been taken in Maryland? Since their first confirmed cases on March 5th, 2020, officials have mobilized a new response team, closed schools, and prohibited large gatherings. On March 16th, bars and restaurants were closed to the public, although drive thru, carryout and delivery services are still being permitted. On the 19th, malls were closed, and gatherings were limited to 10 people or less.

As of March 30th, 2020, Governor Larry Hogan issued a statewide Stay at Home Directive, stating, “We are telling you, unless you have an essential reason to leave your house, stay in your home. Today’s actions of closing non-essential businesses are absolutely necessary to protect the health of Marylanders and to save lives.” He finished with a promise “…that there are a great many dedicated people doing tremendous things, working around the clock, and doing their very best to help keep Marylanders safe.” This order required the closure of any business not included in the federal guidelines for critical infrastructure.
