Spring Activities to Enjoy in Annapolis

Are you looking for an exciting and culturally immersive springtime getaway on the East Coast? The Chesapeake harbor town of Annapolis has much to offer when it comes to entertainment and activities to enjoy in Annapolis, and spring is an especially great time to visit! Whether you’re looking for interesting historical attractions, spring festivals, or to enjoy the great outdoors, you’re sure to love a trip to Annapolis, Maryland.

Outdoor Adventures

With temperatures ranging from the mid-40s to the mid-70s, spring is a great time to be outdoors in Annapolis. Bring or rent a bike and take to the trails in the area, or just take a relaxing walk. The Baltimore and Annapolis Trail runs the historic 13.3-mile route of the Annapolis and Baltimore Short Line and takes you on a winding route through charming parks and neighborhoods. If you want to see some spring blooms, check out the shorter 3.1-mile Greenbury Point Trail and the nearby nature center. In springtime it will be filled with bright and colorful wildflowers!

Get on the Water

Let’s not forget, with our proximity to the water, a boat is the perfect way to explore the areas around Annapolis! If you’re looking to self-paddle, you can easily rent kayaks or canoes at many of our local outfitters. Or if you want a little more power, you can take out a set of jet skis or Wave Runners for an afternoon! But if you’re looking for a more inclusive experience, look into hiring a sailboat – with a captain – for a day! What could be better than a sailboat picnic in the middle of the Chesapeake? Make it extra special and take along a bottle of wine from a local vineyard, like Great Frogs Winery or The Vineyards at Dodon.

Special Events

Speaking of local vineyards, check out some of the events listed on the spring calendars around here. Great Frogs has a Hoppy Spring Happy Hour event with brick oven pizzas and live folk music, as well as pasta making classes on weekends following the happy hour. Other notable events in the area include the 10th Annual Oyster Roast and Sock Burning at the Annapolis Maritime Museum. The festival celebrates the arrival of the boating season, as well as the spring equinox, with literal sock burning, an oyster shucking contest, live music, and of course, all the oysters you can eat. The end of March also brings the 6th year of the Annapolis Film Festival, featuring over 70 films, Q&A sessions, and amazing parties. April brings with it even more fun, with the Maryland Chicken Wing Festival, Maryland Avenue Earth Day Fest, and the Spring Sailboat Show!

If you’re ready to plan your perfect Annapolis spring getaway, call or go online now and book your vacation rental home. We know you won’t be disappointed!

3 Tips for Traveling Light in Annapolis

When you’re traveling to any city, packing lightly can be a great benefit to your vacation. You’ll have less stuff to keep track of, less weight to carry, and less to pack up at the end of your trip. Take our top three Annapolis travel tips on traveling light to Annapolis:

Tip #1: Buy Local Whenever Possible

The less you bring, the easier your time will be when you’re doing the dull part of the vacation (packing, unpacking, and lugging your stuff around). So save on space by buying local whenever the opportunity is there. When you get into town, you can stock up on snacks for the trip at our favorite local grocery spots, like Anne Arundel County Farmers Market, or Maryland Table (great for healthy options), and save yourself the trouble of bringing any along.

Tip #2: Check the Weather Ahead of Time

This is a big one! Being prepared for the weather can dramatically impact the success of your suitcase packing job. Make sure to check the Annapolis weather forecast a few days before you come, and then again right before you leave, in order to get the most accurate prediction. This can save you from such nuisances as bringing a heavy jacket when you only need a light sweater or bringing an umbrella when it never rains a drop. You can tailor your wardrobe specifically to the weather and cut out all the extras and maybes, lightening the load. Shoes are one of the easiest ways to cut down on packing too. You really only need one or two pairs.

Tip #3: Choose a Rental Home (Not a Hotel!)

Cheap hotel rooms come at the cost of freedom, space, and utility. Rent a vacation home while you’re in town instead and relish in the lush comforts that feel just like home! You’ll have plenty of fridge space for anything you might pick up in town, and a washer/dryer so you can wash some clothes while you’re here. That way you don’t have to pack as much or halt your whole vacation for a trip to the laundromat. With other amenities cutting down your packing list (like soft pillows, toiletries, towels, and more) a rental home is your best bet for a lightweight vacation.

Spend Your Stay with At Home Annapolis

At Home Annapolis is the answer to your simplest and easiest vacation. We have all those amenities and utilities taken care of for you, so that you’re freer to enjoy your time in Annapolis. Simply head over to our catalog today and get started on the hunt for your perfect vacation rental home.

Love is in the air! When you’re coming to Annapolis for Annapolis Valentine’s Day Activities, you’re coming to the right city. Let us share with you some of our favorite romantic activities to do here on the most romantic holiday of the year.

Take a Stroll at the Dock

It’s a quaint area, and worth a visit if you’re nearby.

Visit a Winery Together

Walk around the vineyard at Great Frogs and enjoy the romantic solitude that you only find in places such as these, where human mastery meets the wonders of mother nature. You can order wine from the walk-up window for quick service (glasses of wine can range from $8 to $10, whereas bottles range from $30 to $50). There’s even an outdoor patio here where guests can enjoy a bottle of wine without prior reservation. If you’d like to get the most out of your visit to Great Frogs, make a reservation ahead of time for a tasting experience. Let the masters walk you through the wonders of wine! What’s more romantic than a classy wine date?

Plan a Date at Sandy Point State Park

This state park is 786 acres of pure earthly beauty. Find it on the Northwestern shore of the Chesapeake Bay, and plan to stay for at least a few hours. A romantic way to experience the joys of Sandy Point might be to pack along a picnic and surprise your loved one! Or, you can simply eat when you get there. There are places to buy food in the area; picnics are certainly, romantic, though. You’ll find a marina store here, along with boat rentals, so you can really wow your date by taking them out onto the water for some fun activities, like fishing, or the simple joy of sailing. Our Favorite New Flavors in Annapolis

We’re always looking for fresh eateries to spice things up here in Annapolis, and it’s our pleasure to some of our favorite finds with you! Check out our current top three Annapolis restaurants:

Galway Bay Irish Pub

Galway is a good old-fashioned Irish style pub, and it’s as cozy on the inside as the name makes it sound. The seafood here is to die for (try the Char-Grilled Ahi Tuna Steak, you’ll thank yourself), but their sandwich menu is almost better. It’s hard to say which one is truly the best, but Miss Peggy’s Crab Cake Sandwich is a strong contender. Make sure to check out their happy hour (Mon-Fri, 3-7pm) and late-night menus, because that’s the time when this bar is most alive.

Preserve

The specialty here is pickled things of every variety, so if that’s your style, you have to check out the menu at Preserve. You’ll understand why it’s called Preserve when you see all those colorful mason jars lining the shelves! If you go for Happy Hour (Tues-Sun, 3-5pm) you’ll get some nice specials too, and that’s a good time to try more than one thing with a sampler plate. Regardless of whether you like your food pickled, there’s something on the menu for you here. The flavors are thick and strong in every meal; try the PA Dutch Chicken Pot Pie made with farmstead chicken and saffron flavoring, or maybe the Pan Roasted Filet of Arctic Char served up hot with bacon lardons, lima puree, and pea-tendril frisee salad.

Carol’s Creek Cafe

If you like to dine by the waterfront, Carol’s Creek Cafe is a great spot to stop for a bite to eat. The view is lovely, and the food is too! If you’re going for Sunday Brunch, a winning combo is the Crab, Spinach & Swiss Omelet paired with a delicious mimosa while you look out upon the morning waterway. One of our favorite desserts in Annapolis is the Coffee & Donuts Bread Pudding they serve here, made with glazed donuts and served up with coffee-chocolate-chip ice cream and sea salt caramel sauce drizzled across it. Once you eat here, you’ll never forget it. It’s definitely one of the best top three Annapolis restaurants!

U.S. Sailboat Show

This October come and see this one-of-a-kind gathering, where sailors from around the world come together. You’ll never have seen so many interesting boats all in one place before. If you love the sea and sailing, you’ll adore this show, and if you don’t know much about it this is a great chance to learn.

Visit the Renaissance Fair

The Maryland Renaissance Fair runs between August 24th and October 20th, so you have ample time this fall season to come down and catch the fair while you’re here. The Renaissance Fair is always a world of fun, and Maryland truly goes all out. The Renaissance Fair is definitely one of our favorite things to do in Annapolis in the Fall!

Winterbrook Farms

We adore this pumpkin patch for many reasons, including but not limited to the moonlight maze, the private campfires, and the mountain slides. This is a great day activity for any family and evening activity for anyone who wants to do a corn maze in the dark.

Walking Ghost Story Tour

This activity is exactly as exciting and off-the-wall as it sounds. Experience Annapolis in an entirely unique way by taking this 90-minute nighttime walking tour through the city to some of the most ‘haunted’ places in Annapolis. The long weekend that Labor Day provides gives you the perfect amount of time to see the best Annapolis has to offer. Here are some ideas for what to do each day to get the most out of your Annapolis Labor Day Weekend visit:

Saturday

Do something crazy on the first day that will get the entire family excited about the three-day weekend in Annapolis, like a family-friendly pirate cruise with Pirate Adventures on the Chesapeake! Afterward, you can check out some of the amazing museums in town, like the Annapolis Maritime Museum. Keeping with the sailing theme, you can grab some dinner at the Boatyard Bar & Grill, a proudly nautical-themed seafood joint with an amazing vibe and even more amazing food.

Sunday

Sunday is a great day to plan some peak relaxation and sight-seeing. Head to the aptly named Quiet Waters Park, where you can explore hiking trails on foot or on a bike, and even rent a kayak if you want to head out onto the water. If you pack a picnic, you can grab a shady spot under a tree and have your lunch there while you soak in the lovely weather and the scenery. Later on, head to Sandy Point State Park for one of the most gorgeous views you’ll ever lay eyes on. You can see the bridge from there, and the ocean in all its glory. Lay out some towels and chill out with some music on.

Monday

Since you’ve thoroughly enjoyed the waters, on Monday, you’ll want to enjoy the city itself! Check out local favorites like the Maryland Federation of Art for some culture, the Historic Annapolis Museum for some history, and the Old Fox Books & Coffeehouse for some afternoon coffee and a nice quiet look around a good old-fashioned bookstore. Pick up some fancy teas and spices from The Spice & Tea Exchange to take home with and maybe give out to friends as souvenirs! Top off your trip with an ice-cold craft beer from The Brass Tap on your last night in town.

Best Dessert in Annapolis to Beat the Summer Heat

Summer is a gorgeous and lively time of year to visit Annapolis. There are a million things to do here, and you’ll find yourself on the go from the time you arrive, just trying to see it all! When you’re out and about this summer soaking in the sights and sounds of Annapolis, and you start to feel the sun beating down on you, remember these three pro-tips for defeating the summer sunshine:

Cool Off in Style with Annapolis Ice Cream

Conveniently located right on Main Street, this place is a one-stop shop for the creamiest gourmet ice cream you’ll ever taste. This company only uses the finest ingredients available; you won’t find another shop quite like in all of New England! You can even order a custom ice cream cake if you’re having an event, or even if you just want to surprise the family or your group of friends after a long warm day of summer fun in the sun with an ice cold treat to cool off with back at your rental home. This ice cream is definitely the most popular dessert in Annapolis among tourists!

Enjoy a Cold Drink by the River at Boatyard Bar & Grill

This nautical themed restaurant will start cooling you off through aesthetic alone before you even take your first sip of a refreshing ice-cold drink! Dine on crab cakes, clams, and sailor-style mussels while you take your pick from the rick drink menu. Consider trying one of the specialty drinks here, perfect for summertime, like the Fresh Fruit Crushes (made with fresh juices, triple sec, lemon soda, and your choice of lemon, grapefruit, or orange vodka), or the Boatyard’s Bloody (Tito’s Vodka, a delicious house-made Bloody Mary mix, spicy pickled green beans, pepperoncini, olive, and fresh lime).

Hit the Water for the Ultimate Cool-Down

Without a doubt, the best way to beat the sun in Annapolis will always be to head out and enjoy the pride and joy and heart of the city, the gorgeous waters of Chesapeake Bay. Take your pick between sailing, paddleboarding, or even windsurfing! Sporty activities can be hard to enjoy in the heat of the summer sun, but you don’t have to worry about that with water sports on the bay. The waves are nice, the water is refreshing, and that ocean breeze will keep you smiling in the sunshine all day long.
