Best Ice Cream Shops in Annapolis

When it comes to ice cream, we wholeheartedly believe that even though it’s considered a summer dessert, there is never a wrong time to enjoy it! Summer in Annapolis is, of course, the optimum time for enjoying this sweet treat as you walk along the bay, letting the cold cream chill your insides as the breeze from over the water cools your fevered brow. It melts too quickly, however, leaving a sticky mess if you don’t eat it fast enough, so maybe spring or fall is the optimum time to enjoy your ice cream after all. For our winter visitors, while it may be too cold to enjoy an icy treat outside, these are the best ice cream shops in Annapolis.

Annapolis Military Bowl

For many people, the arrival of fall is signified by the feel of a slight chill in the air, the sight of brightly colored leaves dressing up the trees, and even the smell of pumpkin spice everything wafting through the air. For sports fans, however, the arrival of fall is signified by the sights and sounds of grown men wearing tight pants, helmets, and tossing the ole pigskin around on a brightly colored field. Fall is football season, closely followed by Bowl Season for the college fans, and the Annapolis Military Bowl is one of the newest ones added to the club!

Originally Named the Congressional Bowl and Then the Eagle Bank Bowl

This bowl game was determined to be needed when a couple of “regular guys” realized that the Washington area did not have its own bowl game. The first Eagle Bank Bowl was held at the RFK Stadium on December 20, 2008 (Wake Forest won over Navy) and history was made. In 2010, the name was changed to the Annapolis Military Bowl, and in 2013 it was moved to the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium where it has stayed every year since.

This Year’s Annapolis Military Bowl Will Be Held on December 31

The last day of the year is always special, and in Annapolis the last day of 2018 will be even more memorable than ever before as the Annapolis Military Bowl will be held on this auspicious day. The teams have yet to be determined, but the place and time (straight up noon!) are set in stone. Tickets are not on sale yet, but vouchers for free tickets to the bowl game will be offered to active duty military members and their families soon (this includes reservists). To learn when they are going to be reservable, you can sign up to be notified here. Up to 8 tickets can be reserved for each family, and 25,000 tickets will be released by the USO as a thank you for the sacrifices made by our brave military men and women.

How to Spend 48 Hours in Annapolis

Annapolis, while mainly recognized for being home to the US Naval Academy, offers something for everyone, not just new Navy recruits and their families. Sitting on the banks of Chesapeake Bay, its history is a long and rich one, apparent everywhere you turn. And although there are enough activities, restaurants, and Annapolis attractions to keep you entertained for weeks at a time, weekend visitors can experience a large part of what makes this ocean town so special. That’s where we come into the picture. We want our guests to enjoy every minute of their stay with us, so here’s some suggestions on how you can spend your 48 hours in Annapolis!

Who is Ready for Breakfast?

When you live in a military town, you have to expect that the local restaurants really know how to feed people. Start the day off the right way with a hearty breakfast at Evelyn’s consisting of a Weems Creek Omelet stuffed with the best crab the Chesapeake Bay can provide, then prepare for a morning of trekking through homes that represent our long American history. The Colonial Annapolis Historic District is just about the oldest section in town and is where a large portion of our historic homes are located. The Shiplap House is one of our favorites, offering a glimpse into what life was like before our country was officially an independent nation. It was built in 1715 and is one of the oldest in Annapolis. As you walk along tree lined sidewalks, if you listen closely, you can almost hear our nation’s forefathers discussing the war and the king and all things revolutionary. When your feet cry uncle, stop in the Galway Irish Restaurant and Pub for a beer and a burger to tide you over until that special dinner at Carroll’s Creek Café—you know you’ve been looking forward to the seafood and the view ever since you first decided to spend 48 hours in Annapolis!

Annapolis Attractions All About the Bay

Day two is going to be a day spent on or near the water. Begin with a 40-minute cruise on the Harbor Queen; this narrated tour offers a fascinating insight into the town of Annapolis, Chesapeake Bay, and the Harbor Queen herself. From there, you can head in the direction of the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, built in 1875. Hopefully you have brought the good camera, because this is the perfect spot for a family picture! And because the 40-minute tour was just an appetizer, the Schooner Woodwind offers two-hour long tours of the waters that surround Annapolis; if you missed something in the earlier tour, this is your chance to see it again! Finish up the day with an afternoon fishing trip, and dinner can be held on the back of your At Home Annapolis vacation escape—especially if your fishing expedition was a successful one.

Time’s Almost Up

But you still have one more night to spend enjoying the wonders of Maryland without leaving your cozy getaway.
