Remember when we were younger and had all that pent up energy just bursting out of us? Walking at a normal pace was reserved for strolls with our sweeties; in every other situation, we practically ran to get from place to place! Well, today’s youth, in spite of what you may have read on the internet, has the same drive, energy, and pep, and finding ways to direct all that energy in a good direction can be difficult. Those who are planning a summer vacation to Annapolis the week of June 16th will discover an outlet they may never have thought of before: the Truxtun Youth Triathlon!
Truxtun Youth Triathlon – Held at Truxton Park and Beginning at the Truxton Park Pool
For those who aren’t in the know, a Maryland triathlon is a day-long activity that is generally meant for people in tip-top shape, with participants swimming 1.5 kilometers (.93 mile), biking for 40 kilometers (25 miles), and ending with a 10 kilometer (6.2 miles) run. In the IRONMAN competitions the numbers are even higher (1.9-kilometer swim, 90-kilometer bike ride, and 21.1-kilometer run), but before you begin to panic, our Maryland triathlon is a much more modified version, depending on the age of the participant!
Broken into three divisions, including friends and family relay, your healthy tween or teen should be able to do just fine! The Junior Division (ages 7-12) will compete in a 100 meter swim, 4 mile bike ride, and 1 mile run. The Senior Division (ages 13-17) will enjoy a 300 meter swim, 4 mile bike ride, and a 2 mile run. The Friends and Family Relay mimics the Junior divisions mileage, so if you feel like testing your own mettle, sign up and have a ball! Registering online through June 10th will cost the Junior and Senior Divisions $55 per person, while friends and family costs are $75 per person.
Ok, it’s not really like that, but everyone who participates receives a medal, a tee shirt, and a swag bag of goodies after the race; the real winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in all three divisions) will receive trophies and the satisfaction of knowing they are in the best shape of their lives at this moment in time! Arrival/set-up begins at 6 AM, with a mandatory meeting of the athletes following at 7:30 AM. The actual race starts at 8 AM, so for at least one day of your Annapolis getaway, you’re going to have to get up early!

There’s no getting around it, all participants are going to be pretty tired and sore at the end of the day, but you have an advantage: You chose At Home Annapolis for your vacation accommodations!
