Miss Shirley’s

Miss Shirley’s was named for Shirley McDowell, a personal friend and employee of Eddie Dopkin’s, the Baltimore native that created the restaurant. She was known for her charm and love for Southern cooking. Beginning as a 42-seat restaurant in Roland Park, Miss Shirley’s Cafe now has two other locations. Miss Shirley’s cooks Southern classics with fresh ingredients from the Chesapeake Bay area.

Miss Shirley’s: Voted the Best in Maryland

Chef Brigette Bledsoe recreates the menu every year. She shares the same passion as Dopkin’s for local seafood and produce. Her favorites include fresh crab meat, oysters, flounder, Maryland tomatoes, and silver queen corn.

The Menu is Eclectic and Huge

We love the great list of morning cocktails. The Strawberry Bourbon Smash has bourbon, triple sec, squeezed fresh strawberry lemonade, house-made strawberry-jalapeño jam, a splash of club soda, and is garnished with lemon wheel, strawberry, and jalapeño slices. Shirley’s version of a Bloody Mary is called the Spicy Shirley and made with Three Olives vodka, garnished with a green tomato slice, pickled okra, peppers, jalapeño, celery, peppadew, green olive, lemon and lime wedges, and rimmed with Old Bay seasoning.

The menu is huge. It includes omelettes, sandwiches, salads, biscuits, sweet treats, benedicts, steak and more.

For breakfast starters, we love the peach and goat cheese biscuits with house-made strawberry-jalapeño jam and honey and the very sharable cinnamon-scented pull-apart with banana slices, chocolate chips and chocolate sauce, and dusted with powdered sugar and cinnamon.

Other favorites include chicken and waffles, coconut cream-stuffed French toast, and crab and eggs benedict. Food Network Magazine voted “Shirley’s Affair with Oscar” as the “Best Breakfast Maryland.” It’s a 5 oz. black Angus filet, topped with asparagus, jumbo lump crab meat and hollandaise on fried green tomatoes and stone-ground grits with diced bacon, dusted with Old Bay seasoning.
